Commentary on 'GEC and sustainability in Europe' by J. Jäger and T. O'Riordan : The systems perspective
The systems perspective on GEC and SD reflects a new understanding of the problems involved and their resolution. The science appropriate for global environmental issues can be described in a systems perspective with ecosystems studied as hierarchical structures comprising differences of scale and aggregation as well as different levels of complexity and awareness. The combination of fragmented research activity and hegemonic scientific methods is replaced by an awareness of complementarity and plurality both in nature and in science.
