An agro-pedo-climatological knowledge-base of wheat in Europe
Part of the pilot project for the development of a European Community agricultural statistics system relates to the development of agrometeorological models for the regional monitoring of crop state and national yield predictions. The data required for developing and running these models include: (i) statistical time series of cultivated surfaces and yields; (ii) statistical data on the diffusion of the cultivated varieties; (iii) regionalised phenological crop calendars; (iv) physiological and environmental requirements of the crop; (v) cultivation conditions of the crop; (vi) administrative boundaries or homogeneous spatial units where the crop is grown. This report provides a compendium of the information available on the above subjects for the wheat crop growing in the European Union. It is derived from both a search of the literature and from expert knowledge. The contents include a discussion of wheat biology and of the factors determining its distribution in Europe, an extensive review of the conditions affecting wheat growth, a summary of existing models for wheat yield estimation, and information about the spectral signature of wheat.
