Abstract

For the improvement of the material properties of steel through the selective separation of nitrides, carbonitrides and carbides, knowledge of the binding of nitrogen and carbon is of great technical interest. In order to be able to optimize the process control it is necessary to be in a position to analyse the separated phases in steel after each production stage. For this purpose the present research project started to develop further two chemical and two physical processes in which nitrides, carbonitrides and carbides can be examined. With the two physical processes (X-ray microstructure analysis (XMA) and Auger microstructure anlaysis (SAM) the detection limits of the element parts in the precipitations and of the quantities of the precipitations were to be determined, the correctness and accuracy of the values determined were to be checked, and the costs and time required for the determinations to be assessed. The objective for the two chemical processes (thermic decomposition and detection at normal pressure and reduction of the nitrogen in the hydrogen flow with down steam detection methods) was the development of rapid analysis processes for the in-plant serial examination in the quality assurance department.
