Decontamination of solid waste containing alpha, beta and gamma emitters in order to reduce its level classification for storage purposes
Processes to decontaminate alpha, beta and gamma bearing wastes by leaching were studied in the laboratory and at pilot scale. The objectives were: (i) to decontaminate solid or liquid wastes to values within the acceptable limit for surface disposal (residual alpha contamination of below 0.1 Ci per tonne of infill); (ii) to recover leached alpha emitters (Pu, Am, Cm) for separate management of fission products (recycling, transmutation and storage); (iii) to manage fission product effluents and corrosion products resulting from these treatments; (iv) to recycle the electrochemical mediators used. The laboratory studies pursued two main aims: further basic research into the reduction method, begun under the previous contract no. FI1W-0013, and development of applications of the oxidation method to the Ag(II) electrically generated on some of the waste downstreams of the fuel cycle. This report is a synthesis of the main results obtained.
