Abstract

This book describes the design and validation of the distributed fault-tolerant architecture developed within the Delta-4 project. A set of general concepts and terminology regarding dependable and real-time computing is outlined and fault-tolerance techniques based on distribution are highlighted. Two variants of the architecture, the open system architecture (OSA) and the extra performance architecture (XPA), are described and work that has been carried out in the field of security, by intrusion tolerance, and the tolerance of software design faults, by diversified design, is presented.
