Abstract

An irrigation canal, constructed in the southern French Alps at the end of the last century, has been rehabilitated and extended. The channel was replaced by a pipe to increase its capacity and operating safety, and the irrigation area was increased from 100 to 150 ha. A small 2130 kW hydroelectric plant was built to recover energy from the steam which feeds the system. Sales of the resulting energy to Electricité de France provide income to ensure the financial viability of the project.
