The main objective of the present project was to demonstrate how wind energy may help in one particular application, irrigation in remote sites, satisfying the automation requirements of equivalent installations based on fossil fuels or electricity supply. The system is located in Spain, within the Ebro Valley, and consists of a wind turbine and a diesel generator to drive the loads, which are basically the pumps and irrigation system. The 30 kW wind turbine is able to synchronise with the operating diesel of 20 kW enabling parallel operation of both sources. The results have been very encouraging in both system behaviour and reliability, giving good availability and production figures.
