This paper describes the different software tools developed and implemented at the JRC in an inter-institute effort for the applications of a 3-D hydrodynamic model for regional and mesoscale oceanographic processes. The main subjects addressed are: (i) the pre-processor modules designed to prepare in an interactive way the required input data using geophysical data archives; (ii) the data archiving system (for geophysical data and large volumes of model output data); (iii) the characteristics of the 3-D prognostic baroclinic hydrodynamic model developed and applied to simulate the circulation pattern in shelf/deep sea areas; (iv) the possibilities of post-processing including animation and visualisation techniques.
