Abstract

The project was to manufacture, erect and operate an innovative 33 m diameter, 300 kW MS-3 wind turbine at Carmarthen Bay, South Wales. The wind turbine was first synchronised on 29 September 1988 and has operated well since then. Subsequently it has been modified to incorporate two-speed running with output up to 100 kW at 32 rpm and up to 300 kW at 48 rpm. Towards the end of 1989 a soft start system was also incorporated. By the end of the demonstration period, the wind turbine had generated 396,340 kWh and operated for 4023 hours. The performance of the machine matched its predicted output curve against wind speed. Similarly, the predicted costs of manufacture in quantity were in line with predictions at the start of the project.
