Integral management of gas produced in controlled landfills : Self generation of electricity in ArtigasFunded under: ENG-THERMIE 1
The project described here refers to a plant to collect landfill gas for use as an energy source. The plant has been set up in the Artigas controlled landfill in Bilbao, Spain, where waste produced by a population of approximately 800,000 people is deposited. The plant collects the biogas produced in the landfill and burns it in motor-generator units. The electricity is subsequently sent to the electricity grid. The moderate investment involved, a short pay-back period of around 4 years, the environmental advantages and the efficient management of the MSW landfills, all present a more than viable proposition to install this type of plant in other municipal landfills.
