Abstract

Seventeen experimental steel casts have been used to evaluate the effects of V, Ti, Al, B, N and Si, in various alloying element combinations, on HAZ microstructure and toughness. HAZs were produced in all steels using submerged-arc bead in groove welds at 3.5 and 7.5 kJ/mm and thermal simulations were conducted at the same heat inputs. Toughness was evaluated using bead-in-groove welds at 3.5 and 7.5 kJ/mm and thermal simulations were conducted at the same heat inputs. Toughness was evaluated using bead-in-groove Charpy, Gleeble Charpy and bead in groove CTOD test techniques. HAZ microstructure produced by the bead in groove welds were fully characterized using quantitative optical and SEM techniques.
