The PRACLAY project : Demonstration test on the Belgian disposal facility concept for high activity vitrified waste
The main objectives of the PRACLAY project are to investigate the constructional and operational feasibility of the Belgian disposal facility concept for high level radioactive waste. Studies are concerned with the feasibility of excavating a mini-tunnel similar, except in length, to the contemplated disposal galleries, with the industrial techniques that would have to be used in the full-size repository, the construction of a large connection chamber of the type needed in the repository at the crossing between the main and disposal galleries, and the construction and operation of a near field cross-sectionally identical to the projected disposal gallery. The project is also concerned with monitoring the thermal, hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of the clay layer, gallery concrete lining, filling material and metal shroud surrounding the dummy waste. The design process aims to optimise the constructive and operational features of the experiment, focusing particularly on the dimensional and thermal design and the selection of techniques and equipment for gallery construction and backfill.
