  • Towards the integration of the ERS SAR data in an operational system for rapid estimates of acreage and potential yield at the level of the European Union


In previous studies conducted at AIS, it has been shown that ERS-1 imagery significantly improves classification accuracy of agricultural crops, if compared to a monotemporal SPOT scene. Recently, the work has been directed towards the analysis of high dimensional, multitemporal ERS-1 SAR PRI data sets. Nine images of the agricultural season 1992-1993 over the Seville (Spain) site of the MARS project and two images of the Olsztyn (Poland) site are analysed, in both cases in combination with SPOT data. The methods used are based on an improved structure retaining gamma-gamma MAP speckle filter, taking into account second order statistics (sum average or autocorrelation functions). The first results allow rice and cotton surface area estimates in the Guadalquivir valley, south of Seville but the identification of other crops is still difficult.
