Abstract

Qualitative and quantitative studies of vibrations have been conducted using laser holographic methods. The problem of determining the damping associated with the modes of vibration of beams and thin circular plates with fixed boundary conditions is particularly addressed. The natural frequencies of the structures are determined experimentally and compared to ones calculated theoretically. Sinusoidal sound waves of known properties are used for the excitation, and the natural frequencies are identified when a clear visualisation of the corresponding nodal system has been obtained. The latter is effectively accomplished by using the method of time-average holography. The derived values of modal damping satisfactorily exhibit the proper trends.
