The effects of in-situ stress on mining conditions
The aims of the project discussed in this report were to measure the in situ stress field at a number of UK coal mine sites where anomalous stress fields were suspected of causing unusual strata control problems, relate the observed rock failure to the measured magnitudes and directions of in situ stress and to develop methods whereby mines may be planned to alleviate strata control problems associated with anisotropic stress. The work undertaken has shown that the method of overcoring soft inclusion cells is viable within British coal measures.
