Abstract

Within the framework of the Intercommunal Agreement for the Development of Cape Corsica, the communes have chosen tourism as a priority for the economic development of this micro-region. They have therefore started a programme for the illumination of historical monuments and urban areas. The aim of this project was to demonstrate that the photovoltaic solution is well adapted to answer those needs, especially in a remote region of the island where the distribution of electricity is difficult. The photovoltaic systems are designed for the lighting of roads and jetties and the illumination of old towers and castles. Monitoring was carried out on two installations during 1990-92. The main problems encountered during implementation of the project were: (i) non-respect of the schedule and the substituting of certain equipment originally specified in the contract; (ii) technical problems - some components proved unreliable and did not withstand the storms and salt aggression typical of this region; (iii) theft and vandalism; (iv) problems of payment.
