Abstract

The Boom clay formation has been continuously investigated over more than 15 years by SCK/CEN with a view to confirming its favourable characteristics for hosting conditioned high level and long-lived radioactive wastes. The main characteristics investigated in more detail and reported here deal with the dispersion and release barrier capacity of that clay. The Boom clay is considered from the geochemical and hydrological points of view in its naturally occurring environment, and investigated both on the very local scale (in situ tests, laboratory examinations and experiments on samples) and on the regional scale.
