Stripping and gas ionisation effects in a 1 MV D-neutral beam injector
In a 1 MV D-neutral beam injector, the ion beam interaction with the D(2) gas in the ion accelerating gap and in the neutraliser creates energetic stray particles which produce deleterious effects such as injector power loss, electrodes thermal loading, radiation emission and high voltage breakdowns. This paper analyses the different processes and gives quantitative data which can be utilised as a guide for the design of the powerful neutral beam injectors required for ITER.
