This paper addresses the contribution made by neutron radiography (NR) within the European Union member states and deals specifically with the NR technique, available NR facilities in the EU, typical applications of the technique, the present status and future prospects. NR is a non-destructive inspection technique capable of producing images of components, assemblies and material, on film or real-time devices, using neutrons as the penetrating medium. In comparison to X- and gamma-rays, neutrons penetrate heavy metals such as steel, lead or uranium much more easily, whilst at the same time having the unique capability to image light materials such as hydrogen bearing materials or tracer materials such as cadmium, gadolinium, and dysprosium.
