The EC and USNRC have implemented a joint study with the following main objectives: (i) to formulate a generic, state of the art methodology for uncertainty estimation which is capable of finding broad acceptance; (ii) to apply the methodology to obtain more valid estimates of the uncertainties associated with the predictions of COSYMA and MACCS. The first phase of this joint study was concerned with uncertainties resulting from the prediction of the dispersion of radioactive material in the atmosphere and its deposition onto the ground. This report contains a fuller treatment than was possible in the main report of the techniques for uncertainty analysis developed by the EC contractors as part of the joint study and, also, of the differences in the results obtained when using equal or performance-based weighting of judgements of uncertainty expressed by experts.
