Abstract

These proceedings contain papers describing the utility of remote sensing techniques and GIS for applications in forest mapping and forest fire management in the Mediterranean. A wide range of topics including fuel type mapping, vegetation degradation, soil erosion and modelling of fire risk, fire behaviour and the impact of fire on the environment are covered. One of the major concerns highlighted throughout the workshop is the need to recognise the complexity of the Mediterranean region, especially in relation to the centuries of intense human pressure which has led to tremendous diversity in the way the natural environment has been exploited and managed. Proposals to address the difficulties arising from the diversity stressed the need to initiate joint projects in which experts and scientists from many different fields can work together.
