Following regulation by the council of the European Communities on wine growing areas and recommendations by the Economic and Social Committee on classification systems, a working group was established to assess methodologies leading to a zoning of wine growing areas in Europe relying on scientific bases.
This report summarizes the activities and findings of this working group. It includes a review of the bioclimatic indices presently used to describe wine and the climatic and physiological factors relevant to wine maturation. This leads to a discussion of the factors responsible for the variation in grape sugar content and the presentation of a methodology for modelling the phenological stages of the vine and the grape sugar content. The results of an application of the model are displayed in map format.
