The main coal burning method in the UK industrial sector is stoker-firing. These plants have inherently low emission of particulates and NO(x) but little research has been done into the reduction of SO(2) emissions. The objective of this study was to identify and develop SO(2) abatement methods applicable to stoker-fired plants which could be used in the short to medium term to meet emissions legislation in the most cost-effective manner. This would ensure that these plants remain the favoured system for industrial scale applications.
