Abstract

The trend scenario of the western Mediterranean is characterised by internal socioeconomic conflict within the Maghreb countries (mainly in Algeria) and by a type of industrialisation that consumes the resources and in the short-term impoverishes the countries. In this article other possible scenarios are presented. Their paths of development are based, first, on the promotion of inter-Maghreb cohesion and an inter-Maghreb market, and second on the sociotechnical development (with European collaboration) of the Maghreb core territories. The north of Africa has a high strategic value for providing European energy and commerce. The change of trend urgently calls for a unified effort and compromise on the part of the international and national actors.
