Agricultural information systems for the European Commission
This article reviews ways in which remote sensing and GIS are being exploited for greater planning efficiency by the European Commission and as a means of exercising operational control within the 12 member states. To help meet this need, the European Commission's Monitoring of Agricultural Resources with Remote Sensing (MARS) project was established in 1988 by the Joint Research Centre. The development of the MARS project is reviewed and the specific agricultural needs of the European Union are discussed.
