The spatial and temporal variability of coastal upwelling in the northwest African areas was studied using a combination of satellite data and meteorological data. This paper shows an example of the data collected and how it is used as an indicator of the driving force for coastal upwelling and the ocean's response to this force. The aim is to discuss the seasonal variability in coastal upwelling, point out interannual variabilities and indicate how the images of ocean colour may be integrated into the analysis of the coastal upwelling system.
