Abstract

This paper attempts to bring into focus the peculiarities of the Venetian environment, and discusses the conservation of its unique resources by considering in some detail the natural characteristics of the Lagoon, the Gulf of Venice and the Adriatic region in general. The natural and social histories of the city of Venice are linked to its maritime characteristics. The Adriatic Sea is subject to ecological extremes, such as excessive nutrient load, that may trigger severe environmental problems in near-coastal Venice.
