Abstract

This article studies the influence of Pt and Cr ion implantation on both the isothermal and cyclic oxidation behaviour of a Ti48Al2Cr alloy at 800 C. The isothermal oxidation resistance is improved significantly by surface modification with Cr, whereas Pt implantation affects neither the isothermal nor the cyclic oxidation resistance. At 800 C the cyclic oxidation resistance of Cr implanted and non-implanted Ti48Al2Cr is poor and equal because the critical thickness (20 micron) above which spallation of the oxide scale is observed is already reached after 10 one hour cycles.
