The performance of a non-destructive testing method can be evaluated using a set of tools which includes theoretical models. This description is dedicated to ultrasonic non-destructive testing. An exact formulation of the ultrasonic echo signals is discussed and shows how the interaction of a beam with a defect can be handled separately from the instrumentation characteristics and probe sensitivity. Some examples of applications concerning crack tip diffraction are given.
