This book is part of a series of research reports disseminating the results of the ESPRIT programme. ESPRIT project 0SI 95 belongs to the peripheral systems, business systems and house automation sector of the second phase of the programme. The goal was to design and formally specify a new transport service able to meet the requirements of the new applications and to offer the services available at network and sub-network levels. The report includes an extended presentation of the new networking environment and rationale for new standards. The various tasks and goals of the OSI 95 project are presented and include: a XTP study, transport service design, ATM and the communication environment, time extension of LOTOS and standardisation activities.
