This brochure gives an overview of the European Union's RTD activities in relation to some specific environmental problems. The focus is firstly on basic research to generate understanding of the environment and global change, in issues such as the greenhouse effect, ozone holes, forests, pollution, desertification, natural disasters, the oceans of the world, and the socio-economic aspects of sustainable development. Equally high priority is given to technological development, in areas such as energy, transport, industrial hazards, protection of Europe's cultural heritage, nuclear safety, biotechnology, and clean technologies in general.
