Abstract

The MTV Project has for several years been involved in the development of improved global monitoring techniques using earth observations. Since the early eighties the series of AVHRR instruments (on NOAA 7 to 12) have represented a continuous source of information on surface and vegetation conditions at regional, continental and global scales. Such data have traditionally come from a range of stations in a variety of formats which used to be treated separately. In order to streamline the processing of large volumes of AVHRR data which are needed in the framework of the MTV research programme a proposal has been made to develop a unique platform which could accommodate a set of requirements linked to image processing and analysis. The present report describes a first step in that direction. The RETINA platform, developed in house, is the set of convention and software routines now adopted at the MTV Project level. This platform is presented here as the core of future image processing software development for the NOAA AVHRR and other earth observation data sources.
