The engineering of a decision support system for industrial wastes management
At the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, a decision support system for the management of industrial wastes treatment and disposal, was engineered and implemented. Computer science provides the hardware and software tools necessary to implement decision support systems design components. In particular, computer science provides data base design models and programming support tools that are very important for the effective implementation of a decision support system. The fields of management science and operations research provided the theoretical framework in decision analysis that is necessary to design useful approaches to choice making. The areas of organisational behaviour and behavioural and cognitive science provide information concerning how humans and organisations process information and make judgements in a descriptive fashion, which are important when designing human-computer interfaces. For the design of the decision support system mentioned a team of people including computer science and operational research scientists, environmental and chemical engineers, economists, social scientists and physicists, was established. The decisions support system developed is called industrial waste management (IWM) system, and this report aims to describe it.
