In this report a review of the present knowledge about residual stresses in welds of fast breeder reactor (FBR) components is given. Part I gives a short description of the principal components of European LMFBR plants, and the main effects of residual stresses are identified. Part II reviews the main experimental techniques for the evaluation of residual stresses. Both non-destructive and destructive methods are considered. Part III analyses the most commonly used physical-mathematical models for the theoretical determination of residual stresses. It also shows, from a theoretical point of view, the principal problems of welding such as the evaluation of the temperature distribution, the metallurgical evaluation and the stress and strain distributions. Part IV consists of an inventory and a short analysis of codes or recommendations existing in different countries.
