Development of calibration planks for timber stress grading machines
This paper summarises the work of a European collaborative project on the use of calibration planks for mechanical strength grading machines. Currently, the calibration of strength graders is carried out under static conditions and is primarily concerned with checking the proper operation of load cells and transducers. However, no routine dynamic checks are carried out with machines operating under normal working conditions. A calibration plank represents an artificial piece of timber with known physical properties. This can then be fed through a machine to simulate a piece of timber, enabling the machine's operation to be checked under full working conditions.
