Abstract

The distribution of products and the role of intermediates in the oxidation of dimethylsulphide (DMS) in the troposphere remain unclarified, with an apparent disagreement between the results obtained by laboratory and by field studies. A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the kinetics of DMSO formation and removal in the OH radical-initiated oxidation of DMS in air. The experiments were performed in a 480 l chamber equipped with a long path mirror system used for FTIR and tunable diode laser spectroscopy.
