The overall objective of this project was to obtain the reaction rate data for the destruction of NO and N(2)O in fluidised bed combustion. It also investigates the homogeneous formation of thermal NO(x) over the temperature range 800 C to 1600 C and examines the characteristics of non-selective catalytic reduction using ammonia. The report discusses nitrogen oxides and the environment, and the origins of NO and N(2)O. The principal experimental investigations focus on: (i) NO(x) reduction with NH(3) and CO in the gas phase; (ii) the catalytic reduction of NO over calcined limestone; (iii) NO reduction kinetics over coal pyrolysis chars; (iv) NO reduction kinetics at pressure over gasifier chars from a PFBG and a combustion char from a PFBC; (v) NO reduction kinetics at pressure with NH(3) and CO over a limestone and PFBC bed ash.
