Photovoltaic supply of the lighthouse on Palmaiola Island
A photovoltaic powered light has been provided for the lighthouse on Palmaiola Island to replace the gas powered light. The main photovoltaic system consists of a 5.04 kWp array, a 600 Ah, 120 V battery and a 1000 W flashing lamp. A standby 360 Wp photovoltaic system and secondary flasher switches on automatically if the main system fails. The system is regarded as very successful because it has operated without any problems since 1987. The system is fully automatic, requires no refuelling and needs very little maintenance. The photovoltaic light provides a range of 21 nautical miles, compared with 14 for a gas powered light. Furthermore, the cost per unit of energy produced is calculated to be slightly cheaper for the photovoltaic system than for the gas system.
