New low head hydro unitsFunded under: ENG-THERMIE 1
The installation occupies a site on an existing navigation dam on the River Mayenne at Moulin-Corçu. The gross head is 2.16 metres. The objective was to compare the simultaneous operation at demonstration level of an alternator, which is a synchronous machine feeding an isolated network, with an asynchronous machine, continuously connected to the national grid. In normal times, the alternator supplies the national grid. The two units have similar turbines, both of the propellor type, with fixed blades and wicket gates, each rotating by a flow of 4.6 m3/s. The total installed capacity is about 140 kW, and the annual mean output is about 860,000 kWh, which is quite evenly spread over the five winter months and the rest of the year.
