Current methods of recycling and processing spent lubricant oil involve distillation under vacuum and relatively low temperatures, in a wiped thin film evaporator. This leaves a residue of low hydrocarbons and metallic particulates, which is either used for the production of asphalt or incinerated. This project applied a further propane extraction process to the treatment of the residue, resulting in a high velocity viscosity fraction of recycled oils and a much smaller fraction of heavy residue with the required properties for asphalt applications.
