The paper discusses some problems encountered in the implementation of the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) kinematical description for simulating via the finite element method fast transient problems in fluids and structures. The paper starts by recalling the basic concepts of the ALE description and insisting on the need for a continuous and automatic rezone algorithm for moving the finite element mesh. This is followed by a discussion of numerical time integration of the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy, with special emphasis on the stable treatment of the convective terms present in the ALE form of such equations. Finally, the problem of implementing the ALE kinematical description for treating elastic-plastic structures under fast dynamic loadings is discussed.
