Abstract

A short description of the JRC's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) and its major facilities is given. The IRMM's task is defined as that of a bureau of standards specialising in nuclear measurements. For this the preparation and the definition of primary standards are required, and they in turn demand continuous efforts to improve measuring instruments and methods. Additional fields of activity are radioactivity detection and measurement, isotopic composition, and the preparation and definition of reference materials. The current main activities in the field of ionising radiation and radioactivity are briefly described.
