Abstract

Valuing the songbird epitomises the problems of developing and applying ecological economics as a means to rational and effective decision-making for the environment. In such post-normal science, a new methodology and social organisation of work is required, to enable science to encompass the principle of quality through the involvement of the peer community, providing new norms of evidence and discourse. New intellectual tools are required for the management of the task of policy making, enriched and extended to involve both scientific uncertainties and value commitments.
