Abstract

The synergy of the combined heating by neutral beam injection (NBI) and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) is theoretically interpreted using a coupled wave/Fokker Planck equation solver. The synergy occurs through modifications of the target plasma parameters for both NBI and ICRH, and through the direct interaction of the RF with the beam. The interpretation of these results is undertaken for two scenarios: the interactions at the second and at the third ion cyclotron harmonic (2 omega(CD) and 3 omega(CD)). Performances of supershot-like discharges obtained with balanced injection may be substantially improved by beam-RF interaction at both harmonics.
