The cross-sections for electron-impact excitation of CI have been calculated by the R-matrix method for collision energies from threshold up to 150 eV. Twenty-eight states were included in the calculation, namely, all twenty-two states with configurations 1s(2)2s(2)2p(2), 1s(2)2s(2)2p3l (l = 0, 1, 2), 1s(2)2s(2)2p4s or 1s(2)2s2p(3) that lie below the first ionisation threshold, together with three ls(2)2s2p(3) states just above the ionisation threshold and three 1s(2)2p(4) doubly excited states. Results are presented for excitation of the 1s(2)2s(2)2p3l states from the 1s(2)2s(2)2p(2) 3P, 1D, 1S and the 1s(2)2s2p(3) 5S(0) states. Results are also presented for all the n = 2 to 2 transitions, except those involving the 1s(2)2p(4) states. The transitions between the n = 3 levels themselves are excluded because of non-convergence at the higher energies. Rate coefficients and effective collision strengths are also presented for temperatures between 1.0 E4 K and 1.0 E6 K.
