Physics or stamp-collecting? Thoughts on ecosystem model design
This paper focuses on the decisions that need to be made by modellers of ecosystems. The importance of model purpose, design criteria, model prediction, and model validity are discussed from a theoretical standpoint and are illustrated with examples drawn from EXE, the energy, water and momentum exchange and ecological dynamics model.
