This paper introduces the field of heavy-ion induced fusion with emphasis on the physics of the fusion target. It contains a qualitative description of the fusion target evolution, and proceeds from the physics of fusion burn through to target implosion and ion-beam matter interaction. The basic principles behind heavy-ion fusion accelerators are outlined and the paper concludes with the achievements of the ICF.
