New steps are being taken by JET to set up a programme which emphasises coherent development of steady state plasmas. A number of machines, including JET, have already made considerable steps towards obtaining the target plasma conditions. The results that have already been obtained from JET and DIII-D are described. Particular attention is given to the further developments which are required so that the future JET programme can be discussed.
