Abstract

In this paper a candidate excitation mechanism for a specific case of injected beam-driven ion cyclotron emission (ICE) observed in TFTR experiments is outlined. Numerical and analytical linear stability calculations are presented together with an analytical description. The study is motivated by the requirement to exploit fully the potential of ICE as a natural diagnostic of energetic ion populations in tokamaks. The successful interpretation of beam driven ICE in TFTR edge plasma is identified as a useful challenge. The specific instability which may be responsible is analysed.
