Evidence of the formation of metallothionein-like metal binding proteins in the marine clam Macoma balthica from the Westerschelde estuary (NL)
This article presents a study of the formation of metallothioneins in a European population of Macoma balthica from the metal polluted Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands). The clams were collected at two locations in the estuary and exposed to different levels of cadmium, copper and zinc. The results of the total metal concentrations, metal partitioning and distribution are presented and the results compared with Macoma balthica from the San Francisco Bay and Cumbria.
